Arlene Frames
(Women At Risk Board Member/Outreach and Education Coordinator)

by Laura Whitehorn

Arlene Frames wasn’t much of a talker until she became HIV positive. The formerly reticent Frames found her voice after testing positive 21 years ago, when she realized she had to advocate for herself and that she wanted to do that for other positive people as well.

Women At Risk was recently honored with the extraordinary donation of a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) featuring Actress/Activist Jasmine Guy. In addition to an English PSA, we were also given a Spanish PSA featuring Actor/Activist Joseph Julian Soria. The new PSA's were shot on the set of the film Tru Loved. This film, directed by Stewart Wade, has a wonderfully talented cast that includes Guy and Soria as well as Nichelle Nichols, Bruce Vilanch, Alexandra Paul, Cynda Williams and Jane Lynch among many other brilliant actors. We are so grateful and extremely appreciative of this gift. We thank Jasmine, Joseph, Stewart Wade, Eric Borsum, Liz Owen and the entire cast of crew of Tru Loved. We are honored and awed by your supreme generosity.

“B” is for Brave…

My Dear Sweet Beau,

You are all of these things and so much more!  During your short time on this earth, you touched the lives of so many people—I don’t think that you ever really realized the enormity of the impact that you made here.  Perhaps, as you look down on this gathering today, you will finally understand.

My life will be forever changed because you were a part of it, Beau.  You taught me the meaning of unconditional love (even though some days it may not have felt that way for you on the receiving end!).  You made room in your heart for me to be a mother to you, even though you already had one.  You were a “thief of hearts” of sorts…you certainly stole mine the first time we met!

We shared a bond beyond our comprehension, and for that, I will always be grateful.  Your strength gave me strength, Beau.  You truly were “the wind beneath my wings”.  I can only imagine how heavy the burden of being a hero to so many must’ve been some days.

Over the past few months, you expressed to both your mother and me that you thought your life was worthless…that you didn’t really make a difference.  I can only pray that you are hearing every single word of this celebration of your life and that you may finally know in your soul just how deeply you touched us all.

We will miss you, Beau.  Thank you for allowing me the honor of being your evil, wicked step-mother; I consider it to be one of the greatest gifts of my life, and I enjoyed every moment of it!  You are unequivocally one of the five people I’ll meet in Heaven…

…Until then, I love you!  Your “Pammy”

"A Fork in the Road" by Cathy Olufs

"I sat on my bunk watching prison life going on around me and I knew that the time had come for self-reckoning. I didn't want to end up in prison forever, let alone dead, so I had better make some changes." -- I've often read stories about HIV+ women who have been through addiction and/or incarceration, and have since gotten jobs, got married, had babies, or even started businesses.
